I called you today to ask you a few question about the EU's decision to extend music copyright protection from 50 to 70 years, and you said you preferred to receive the questions by e-mail. So, I hope you are not too busy to answer them. Thank you for your time.

What do you think of the new EU directive which means that music copyright protection has been extended from 50 to 70 years? Is this good news or bad news?


Your party believes that music should be available for free? Don’t artists need to make money for the work that they put in to create the music for consumers?


What do you think of the levies imposed on third parties to create revenues for artists? These levies are imposed on digital device producers, internet providers, etc.

Koukejme se spíše na to z pohledu té redaktorky. Ona má za úkol napsat článek "stanovisko Pirátů". Takže spíš bych byl pro ten rozhovor vzít, vytahat z něj odpovědi na otázky p. redaktorky, přeložit je a poslat je jako stanovisko předsedy Pirátů do Prague Post. Souhlasíš Ivane?
Jsem na tom teď špatně s časem, ale nechtěl bych, abychom o tuto příležitost přišli, takže když bude nejhůř, tak bych se toho i ujal a zařídil to. Počítám ale, že je nutné udělat toto všechno tak do neděle...

What do you think of the new EU directive which means that music copyright protection has been extended from 50 to 70 years? Is this good news or bad news?

It is a very bad news. Even the Czech Ministry of Culture stated in 2008 that it is just a result of pressure from lobbyists of the recording companies. On the other hand, it just widened the gap between the copyright monopoly and reality, so such steps will ultimately lead to a faster fail of the whole concept of copyright.


Your party believes that music should be available for free? Don’t artists need to make money for the work that they put in to create the music for consumers?

No, we believe that noncommercial filesharing should be legal. Downloading music is already legal in the Czech Republic. We believe that it is up to the artists to find ways how to make money on music. The state should not guarantee profits for the music industry (or any other industry), since state should serve its citizens not to specific pressure groups. Also Pirates statistically spend more money on music than the average citizens.

What do you think of the levies imposed on third parties to create revenues for artists? These levies are imposed on digital device producers, internet providers, etc.

We think, that these levies should be abandoned as unjust and unfair.
