Greetings fellow Pirates,

As some of you probably know, the regional elections and the first round of the senate elections took place last Friday and Saturday in the Czech Republic. The regional elections took place in 13 out of 14 regions of the country (the capital is a region by itself and therefore has only municipal elections). In previous regional elections, the social democrats won in all of the regions. This time they lost 4 of the regions, 2 of them to the communist party who scored the second highest score in these elections. The rightist parties mostly scored around 10% which is understandable considering that they're the government parties and almost everybody hates the government in Czechia now.

The results of the Pirate Party are more than satisfactory for us. We scored an average of 2.19% (ranging from 1.41% to 3.03%) in the whole country. That is 2.75 times the result in 2010. Our campaign cost somewhere around 4000 EUR and we earned a total of more than 57000 votes. The average election attendance was 36,89% which translates to 2 763 464 people. We are mostly happy with the election result, but we are horrified by the lack of interest in elections when it comes to young people, because young people are the target demographic for the Pirate Party. We're now rethinking our strategy for the next elections as there might be early parliamentary elections in 2013 in case our government falls. In case the government holds up, the parliamentary elections will take place in 2014 just before or together with the European elections.

About a month ago, student mock elections took place in 170 schools in Czechia. The Pirate Party won with about 21% out of 22 000 votes. The Czech Television, the only public TV in Czechia, had this information on their website for about an hour and then deleted it for no reason. We complained about this and received a response saying the student elections are not accurate and could, therefore, influence people in a wrong way and, therefore, have to be disregarded by the television. This weekend when the TV was showing the preliminary election results (talking about the regional elections now) and even the final ones. They left us out in most of the charts they were showing and at least once they left us out and showed the greens who scored less then we did. This is starting to get really annoying and our board is currently exploring our options in terms of official complaints and other legal actions.

As for the senate elections (I kept the best news for last), we had three candidates. Two of them were members of the Pirate Party and scored 3% and 4% respectively. Our third senatorial candidate whom we shared with the greens and christian democrats, a whistleblower called Libor Michalek, scored 24,31% of the vote and won the first round of the election. In the second round, he will face off against a social democrat who scored 17,82%. So, hopefully, we'll have a senator in a week. Fingers crossed!

That is probably all the interesting stuff I had to share so let me just conclude with a few motivational words: There will be a lot of situations when your efforts will seem pointless and you'll be in temptation of using a little bit of the "old politics" style techniques to succeed (at least I know I was) - bending your ideals or lying to the voters just to get a better election result - but if you prevail over that temptation and keep on explaining yourself to the people, they will eventually come around. It's far from easy, but it's more than worth it.

Belgian results for the communal and provincial elections are available as well. Scoring ranges from 0,5% up to 5,16%.

Note that the political scene is different in the French-speaking and Dutch-speaking part, accounting probably for a difference in results. The pirate party is one of the very few parties in common in both parts of the country. The Pirate Party scores significantly better in the French-speaking areas of Belgium (Wallonie and Brussels), with a median score of 2,41% and a maximum of 5,16%. The Dutch-speaking areas score (only) a median of 1,1% and a maximum of 2,7%.

Unfortunately, in local elections seats are given with a method which favors bigger parties a lot. So no seats were won. However, if we keep on the current track until the next elections in 2014, we will very likely gain seats. To gain a seat we will then have to score 5%, after which we immediately gain multiple seats.

I've got fantastic news. The PP-CZ have won the second round of the
senatorial elections and whistleblower Libor Michalek has, therefore,
become the first ever Pirate senator.

Some numbers for you (round):
Election attendance: 27.66% (1st) | 19.07% (2nd)
Valid votes: 22 702 (1st) | 15 871 (2nd)
Libor Michalek (Pirates + Greens + Christian democrats): 5520 votes =
24,31% (1st) | 11807 votes = 74,39% (2nd)
Stanislav Krecek (Social democrats) (current senator): 4046 votes =
17,82% (1st) | 4064 votes = 25,60% (2nd)

As you can see, we scored 74,39% of the vote which is very nice. But
what is even nicer is that the rival candidate received just eighteen
more votes in the second round than in the first one which means that
almost all of the people who didn't vote for any of these two
candidates in the first round voted for our candidate in the second
one. We believe that to be a huge sign for us saying that people care
about transparency in government and financial affairs of the state
which is the #1 goal of our senatorial candidate.
